In spite of its title this book is a series of loosely connected sketches rather than a systematic presentation of Indo-European inflection. Its chief aim is a fuller appreciation of internal evidence as oifered by the historical languages and the establishing of the relative chronology of the diiferent devices serving as exponents of verbal and nominal inflection.

The renewal of grammatical analysis due to structural methods is most effective Where overall categories, such as the inflectional ones, are concerned. It is indeed in such cases that we approach what may be called semantic universals in language.
